TRIVIA
-Pre Production-
- This is the first public script written by Rory Joscelyne and his first time Directing.
- Rory had written two scripts in University, one of which earned him a Distinction in Script Writing despite being largely unfinished (One of only 6 people in the country to achieve a script Distinction in that year). The unfinished play is being turned into 5-book series of novels called Syndicate Prime.
- The other University script was a 1 Act play used in his Directing project at University. It is a westernised rewrite of one of the stories in Koji Suzuki’s Dark Water (Both the Japanese and American films of the same name focus on the first story, the story Rory chose was the sixth story about a potholer’s death closed inside a dark cave.
- The script of Cosmic Resonance has been under development since 4th July 2009.
- The original concept of the play was to see if it is possible to do a serious hard-edged Sci-Fi play and how you could tackle the issues of Sci-Fi on a small budget.
- To tackle the themes of Sci-Fi, Rory concluded that the play must include aliens otherwise there’s not much point in the space theme. The issue occurs in showing the alien, as a man in a rubber suit would immediately destory all integrity to the play. If the aliens were to not be shown at all, the audience would feel cheated. Rory spent 3 months planning how to show the aliens, without destroying the play’s integrity and with a very small amateur budget.
- Rory is a constant study of psychology, sociology and the human reaction. Cosmic Resonance creates characters that resonate with his own psyche, dealing with the breaking down of mental stability and the maddening effect of isolation. The key influence was his living conditions at the time, as he still shared a room with his brother and couldn’t find any time at all to be isolated.
- Rory spent two months designing the ship, also working through the physics of space with his best friend (Who is doing a Doctorate in Physics).
- The full explaination of how the Nuclear Fusion power system operates can be found in physics theory texts (And is the power system our current Nuclear Technology is building towards). The 2009 Star Trek movie also utilised the same theory of Nuclear Fusion for the nacelles of the redesigned Enterprise however this came out after Rory had begun his development plans.
- Undoubtably people would ask how the crew have gravity on the ship, but this has been accounted for. The theory of Linear Acceleration is used (Research it if you like, it is on Wikipedia too), and the ship has been designed with this kind of artificial gravity in mind.
- Despite being interesting background work all the theories of physics are not included within the script directly, for a stage play the science was considered unnecessary and not interesting to watch.
- There is a planned Cosmic Resonance novel which will contain more information on the science elements. It would also show scenes from Earth on the state of the Global Cold War, however these scenes were omitted from the theatre script.
- Rory is planning on a filmed trailer for the play (Using the filming crew from All For One) to advertise the play to a broad audience.
- Based on Rory’s lineart drawings of the ship from July 2009, Miranda L. Ketchen (A long time friend of Rory’s) created the nebula space backgrounds used in the promotional material and a detailed render of the ship on 25th September 2010.
-Production-
- Rory begun the development plans of creating and building the scale models of the space ships to be used in Cosmic Resonance.
